2013 The Little Big Things
We live for the big moments, the big homes, the big cars, the big checks.... The moments on stage where the spot light is on us and we demand every eyes attention. That moment in office where you have just been elected as President. That moment when you get to say "I do" to that special someone. The moment when your movie breaks box office records. That moment where your company hits Forbes top 50. We live dreaming about these moments and for some of us it is an actual pursuit.
But before we get to these big moments, is it not the little moments that prepare us for them. Before the big homes, cars and checks we start off smaller ones......that may cause life to be very difficult to endure.....none-the-less we build our way up. Before that moment on stage do we not practice in front of the mirror over and over and over. Before we say "I do," do we not prepare ourselves in dating and getting to know each other.
I think about art, how an artist can paint that big picture for the audience to see. The result of the painting can speak volumes through its color, texture and style. Some people willingly pay thousands of dollars for one painting because they fall in love with the big picture. But before the big picture is finished the artist has to go through hours and hours of brainstorming, drawing, planning and painting. The artist cannot think of the big picture and magically make it appear on the canvas.....no, the artist has to stroke by stroke create this master piece. He does not leave one detail behind, he must strategically place colors and shapes down on the canvas with the big picture in mind. Different styles of paint call for different focuses when painting. This is why I have been obsessed with eyes recently. An eye may look simple from afar but made up of astonishing details. I love drawing and painting eyes, because every detail added to it has so much to say. You can experience what someone else is feeling just by reading into their eyes....
I do hope that the year of 2013 is full of big moments, but I will not neglect the fact that it first starts with the little ones. I will prepare myself in the little things of life like character, integrity and consistency so I can move towards the big moments in life. Before I am on stage I will dedicate hours and hours of work in front of the mirror. Before I find a spouse I will be sure to practice loving sacrificially unto others, so i can treat her likewise. Before I receive that big check I will continually give to those who need. My hope is for the big moments but my focus is to prepare myself through the little ones.
I hope that you can join me as I focus on the little things in life this next year. To focus on the daily choices that impact our big moments. The choices that may be difficult to do but have such amazing rewards. Maybe its saying no to sugar, or carbs.....maybe its saying no to the another drink or smoke.....maybe its saying no to even going out that night. Perhaps it is saying no to certain people...The focus is to prepare for the big moments and not be stuck on the pleasures of the little ones.
It is the little things in life that matter the most. They truly reveal who we are and what we live for.
