Christ Mass

It never ceases to amaze me how intentional our society is about rejecting truth.

If you ask me what year we are in, I would respond with 2011. I am assuming you will do the same because we all have decided to agree on today's date. But why is that we have agreed to live according to this universal time frame? Well, I could give you some scientific answer, make up something and call it a day, but I would be miss leading you.  Instead, let me give you truth, something that that is rare to find these days because it is so often neglected.

See about 2,000 years ago our calendar marks the birth of a child that changed the world forever. He said (paraphrasing of course) "Stop trying to make it to heaven according to your good deeds, you can't, all you have to do is believe in me now!" This child was no ordinary man....no...He is God who humbled himself, became human for the sake our redemption back to Him. His birth marked the beginning of a new time, a new calendar and the world began counting days from then on.

Now 2,000 years later we celebrate His birth every year this time around, Christmas. I am sure you have seen the Charlie Brown Christmas episode, if you have not, please do. Linus takes Charlie Brown from the focus of consumerism to the true meaning of Christmas.

After working a promotional gig in the mall all day on black friday and being in awe of the intense shoppers I read an article that said the total sales for black friday and cyber monday in the U.S. went up about 30%...and I thought to myself, how can we be in the heart of a recession, yet find the funds to not only shop for gifts, but increase the sales market by 14%? Although this is amazing for our economy, it shows where we place our true values. Don't get me wrong, I think gifts are amazing, but we have taken it to the opposite extreme. We have come so far from meaning and become so consumeristic that truth is neglected and intentionally rejected constantly.

The word Christmas, originated from the words Christ Mass. Without getting into too much details, it is an Old English word, Cristaemasse, that originated from Hebrew into Greek. The Greek word,  Kristos (Christ) is translated from the Hebrew word, Māšîaḥ (Messiah).

The word Christmas itself, if used in its correct definition means Christ Messiah, or Christ the Messiah. So try this, instead of using the word Christmas, trying using Christ Messiah or Christ the Messiah, it could change your perspective. Now one of the definitions of Merry, is to be joyous in spirit. So rather than just saying Merry Christmas (which has lost its true meaning) you can say, "Be filled with a joyful spirit because Christ the Messiah was born"
